A zine (pronounced zeen) is short for magazine or sometimes fanzine.
It's a small publication like a magazine but usually made by hand by one person or a small group. One of the main differences between a magazine is that zines aren't about making money, instead they are made out of passion, and are usually hand-drawn, collaged, written, and self-published by the artist or creator. Zines made for more widespread publication are often photocopied en-masse and are often a way of giving unheard voices a platform not usually given in mainstream publications.

"I’ve been making zines for years. Since I was about 17. For me visual art is just as important to me as performance. And having a visual reference to consolidate what is occurring performatively is important. Marama, who designed our first season, recognised that when she and Puti put the structure of The Contours of Heaven together, a great way to respond in a way I’d understand was to make a zine.
I think we should all consider how this type of visual output might be helpful as part of anything we’re going through. Whether it’s making something, or a process of learning. If having a visual output is going to be of use to you, or help you make sense of something, then why not create?"
